I loved growing up in Columbia, Missouri which is why I decided to stay here for college. My admiration is felt worldwide. There are three colleges that attract students from every corner of the world, turning this small, Midwestern city into a tossed salad of different cultures. Of course, this is what is always being emphasized: Diversity. Perhaps not as reflected in some parts of the Midwest, diversity is what the colleges and the city thrives on. The University of Missouri, Stephens College, and Columbia College are staples in the community that offer degree programs as diverse as their student body. The University of Missouri, or simply Mizzou was founded in 1839. The university has over 285 degree programs (40 online degree programs), among which are journalism, family and community medicine, and law. Mizzou continues to set itself apart from other universities around the country with the abundant opportunities it offers. The Freshman Interest Groups (FIG) allow new students to live in a community with peers who share their same interests. They live together, take core classes together, attend events together, and have access to upperclassmen who serve as advisors. This is a great way to build a firm academic foundation your first year of college while building relationships with those that you share interests with. Another opportunity offered is the Undergraduate Research Program which allows undergrad students to work one on one with a faculty member to research and solve problems that help generate more knowledge about a particular topic. Mizzour also offers a "create your own major" option. This allows you to be a sort of "jack of all trades" by allowing you to combine your interests in different fields into one interdisciplinary degree. After obtaining your undergraduate degree from Mizzou, you are guaranteed admittance to the School of Law, School of Medicine and College of Veterinary Medicine to obtain your graduate degree. Mizzou strives to cater to the students while giving them the best educational experience possible. The previous opportunities are only a handful of what is offered, the college's website offers much more in depth coverage of each program. Stephens College was founded in 1833 as a place to educate women in the still unsettled territory. Stephen's College sought to educate women so that might play a valuable role in bettering society. Over the past 176 years, Stephans College has transformed the roles of women through its performing arts and pre professional programs. The school offers more than 50 majors and minors including equestrian training and instruction, interior design, legal studies, theatre arts, occupational therapy, and many more diverse programs. Unlike Mizzou where 500 students may comprise one class, Stephens has a student to teacher ratio of 13:1. Although it is a much smaller school, Stephens does maintain academic partnerships with Mizzou, Washington University in St. Louis, and Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pa. The focus of the school is on the performing and creative arts, but is in no way limited and offers many pre professional programs in medicine, law, dentistry, and veterinary medicine. Stephens focus is to educate and inspire women who will go confidently into the world and hold to Stephens Ten Ideals: Respect, Courage, Independence, Support, Sensitivity, Responsibility, Belief, Creativity, Intelligence, Leadership. Columbia College, founded in 1851 is the youngest of the three and my institution of choice... I will remain unbiased. Columbia College first began as a women's Christian College, but is now a gender, and culturally diverse educational institution that offers numerous degree program from forensic science to business administration to computer science. Around 1200 students attend the day campus, comprised of individuals from across town, the state, country, and the world (25 countries represented). Including the evening and online program there is over 25,000 student admissions. The day campus has a 14:1 student to teacher ratio as classes are kept intentionally small. This was one of the deciding factors for me. Because the class sizes are so small I have been able to get to know most of my classmates and also be a regular visitor to my professors offices whether it be to talk about academics or the latest movie. The relationships that I have built have made my learning experience so much more enjoyable. I also have to mention that for the past 30 years, Columbia College is a top choice among the US military as it has 34 extended campuses throughout the country (and Guantanomo Bay) in order to help military personnel acquire higher education. The good word about Columbia College has gotten out as the college has seen an increase in enrollment, finding it crucial to hire more faculty members. In the coming years the college will be building a new science facility that will house state of the art labs and class rooms. Columbia College was ranked as one of the best colleges in the midwest by the Princeton Review. Columbia College is all about continuous improvement so it can continue to provide state of the art education for its students. It stellar reputation is growing with its student body. All three colleges are located within blocks of each other and are situated in the downtown area of Columbia. Downtown Columbia is full of restaurants, bars, shops, music venues that cater to a wide range of taste. It is the place where students from all colleges converge and spend their time. With the activities the colleges offer and the unending events that are going on downtown students always can find ways to experience all that Columbia has to offer! When I try to sum up what each college is like, the style, or culture, I always reference an observation I made one night at The Penguin, a downtown piano bar: The students from Columbia College all sit at the table together, having a great time laughing and joking while we sip on our Long Islands, the Mizzou students are very loud expressing how good of time they are having and want everyone to know it, and the students from Stephen's jump onto the stage, dancing, showing everyone what a great time they are having! This is what I love about going to school in a college town...it affords you the opportunity to mix, mingle, and learn about students from other colleges. I would be happy to attend any of the colleges, but to see what best fits you, be sure to check out their websites. |
