Recently I was engaged in a conversion with a good friend mine. Her being a PHD student told me that she had the privilege of speaking with high school students about attending college. She asked one girl in particular what she was planning on majoring in. The girl's response was that she wanted to major in the one that made the most money. The high school student had no interest on what she wanted to do for the rest of life other than make a good income. I realized many high school students probably share her enthusiasm for attending college. It is true that the reason why people go to college is to earn a good income. Statistics show that people with a bachelor's degree will make twice as much in their life than if they didn't. And income levels grow higher with graduate degrees. But what many students don't understand is all the work that needs to be done in order to obtain it. Endless hours of reading, continual preparing of exams, numerous nights writing ten page research papers are only the beginning. You will be expected to treat your college education on a professional level. Excuses for being sick, car problems, and etc. for not attending classes are frowned upon many professors. And many will NOT give you a second chance to make up missed exams or work. Remember that they are the ones that employers will ask for a letter of recommendation. Because of the amount of time and work having to be committed to a college career, it can be more enjoyable if choosing a path that is of interest. Otherwise you would be bored to tears and end up hating college because your sole motivation is depending upon a large income after graduation. College is tough enough, and having to study over topics you could care less about is a waste of time and energy. The work it takes to be able to get good grades in college can be subjected to that of working sixty hours a week or more if you are full-time student. Good grades are very important in college considering that many employers will look at your GPA. It will tell them how serious you where with your education, and what type of employee you may be. Go ahead and start looking at classifieds for those well paid jobs. You will see that most require a minimum of a 3.5 GPA just to apply. Not good for those who want to breeze through college. Do you have scholarships to pay for your education or are your parents footing the bill? Whether you will pay for school by student loans, part-time jobs, or on daddy's money, college is not free. What a better way to toss thirty grand or more out the window then by majoring in something you don't like. And don't forget about the experience needed in your money-making field. I always suggest to people to work at different places to get a feel for that type of career. At least at this point you can quit the job and go on. But after graduation, you can't change your major. The only thing you can do is go back to school for another two to three years and another twenty thousand dollars for a career change. I myself hoped in obtaining good employment after graduation with a decent income. But before I went to college, I knew I wanted to be in the field of science. So I attended a community college and received my Associates of Science in Biology. I knew I would never cut it as a doctor, not even a nurse, so held out for three years working until I knew what I wanted to finish my degree in. I discovered a hidden talent for gardening and my passion for plants grew as a grounds worker. That was when I made up my mind to go back to school and finish with a Bachelors of Science in Horticulture. Also working outside pulling weeds all day is not my dream job. Now I do have a great job doing what I love, however my income level is not what I was wanting. It could have been if I choose to move, but I decided to stay close to my family. I now work for Academia and I tell you there is nothing more depressing then seeing students not care about their own research projects. The only thing holding them back from graduation is procrastination to do the work. If they would have followed their passions, the work needed would have come as joy, not a burden. Hoping for a nice salary after college is not a bad thing, but choosing a path that doesn't interest you is. Please take the time to find what places a spark in your life before attending college. What better than to be happy and content working with something you love versus working for a dreadful career just so you can buy material things? |
