It               is               the               home               of               nine               diverse               community               colleges               in               the               Los               Angeles               area.

LACCD               serves               over               three               million               students               from               every               walk               of               life.

Many               under               served               populations               get               their               educational               start               at               one               of               these               nine               institutions.

According               to               the               LACCD               website               (www.laccd.edu),               "LACCD               educates               three               times               as               many               Latino               students               and               nearly               four               times               as               many               African               American               students               as               all               of               the               University               of               California               populations."

CSUN               has               one               of               the               top               teaching               schools               in               the               country.


               The               students               at               Mission               get               their               start               by               helping               others               in               their               own               community.

               Los               Angeles               Valley               College               www.lavc.edu,               is               located               in               Van               Nuys               and               was               established               in               1949.

On               opening               day               there               were               439               students.

Today               that               enrollment               exceeds               17,000               students.

    Recently               I               was               engaged               in               a               conversion               with               a               good               friend               mine.

    Her               being               a               PHD               student               told               me               that               she               had               the               privilege               of               speaking               with               high               school               students               about               attending               college.

    She               asked               one               girl               in               particular               what               she               was               planning               on               majoring               in.

    The               girl's               response               was               that               she               wanted               to               major               in               the               one               that               made               the               most               money.

    The               high               school               student               had               no               interest               on               what               she               wanted               to               do               for               the               rest               of               life               other               than               make               a               good               income.

    I               realized               many               high               school               students               probably               share               her               enthusiasm               for               attending               college.

    It               is               true               that               the               reason               why               people               go               to               college               is               to               earn               a               good               income.

    Statistics               show               that               people               with               a               bachelor's               degree               will               make               twice               as               much               in               their               life               than               if               they               didn't.

    And               income               levels               grow               higher               with               graduate               degrees.

    But               what               many               students               don't               understand               is               all               the               work               that               needs               to               be               done               in               order               to               obtain               it.
                   Endless               hours               of               reading,               continual               preparing               of               exams,               numerous               nights               writing               ten               page               research               papers               are               only               the               beginning.

    You               will               be               expected               to               treat               your               college               education               on               a               professional               level.

    Excuses               for               being               sick,               car               problems,               and               etc.

    for               not               attending               classes               are               frowned               upon               many               professors.

    And               many               will               NOT               give               you               a               second               chance               to               make               up               missed               exams               or               work.

    Remember               that               they               are               the               ones               that               employers               will               ask               for               a               letter               of               recommendation.
                   Because               of               the               amount               of               time               and               work               having               to               be               committed               to               a               college               career,               it               can               be               more               enjoyable               if               choosing               a               path               that               is               of               interest.

    Otherwise               you               would               be               bored               to               tears               and               end               up               hating               college               because               your               sole               motivation               is               depending               upon               a               large               income               after               graduation.

    College               is               tough               enough,               and               having               to               study               over               topics               you               could               care               less               about               is               a               waste               of               time               and               energy.
                   The               work               it               takes               to               be               able               to               get               good               grades               in               college               can               be               subjected               to               that               of               working               sixty               hours               a               week               or               more               if               you               are               full-time               student.

    Good               grades               are               very               important               in               college               considering               that               many               employers               will               look               at               your               GPA.

    It               will               tell               them               how               serious               you               where               with               your               education,               and               what               type               of               employee               you               may               be.

    Go               ahead               and               start               looking               at               classifieds               for               those               well               paid               jobs.

    You               will               see               that               most               require               a               minimum               of               a               3.5               GPA               just               to               apply.

    Not               good               for               those               who               want               to               breeze               through               college.
                   Do               you               have               scholarships               to               pay               for               your               education               or               are               your               parents               footing               the               bill?

    Whether               you               will               pay               for               school               by               student               loans,               part-time               jobs,               or               on               daddy's               money,               college               is               not               free.

    What               a               better               way               to               toss               thirty               grand               or               more               out               the               window               then               by               majoring               in               something               you               don't               like.
                   And               don't               forget               about               the               experience               needed               in               your               money-making               field.

    I               always               suggest               to               people               to               work               at               different               places               to               get               a               feel               for               that               type               of               career.

    At               least               at               this               point               you               can               quit               the               job               and               go               on.

    But               after               graduation,               you               can't               change               your               major.

    The               only               thing               you               can               do               is               go               back               to               school               for               another               two               to               three               years               and               another               twenty               thousand               dollars               for               a               career               change.
                   I               myself               hoped               in               obtaining               good               employment               after               graduation               with               a               decent               income.

    But               before               I               went               to               college,               I               knew               I               wanted               to               be               in               the               field               of               science.

    So               I               attended               a               community               college               and               received               my               Associates               of               Science               in               Biology.

    I               knew               I               would               never               cut               it               as               a               doctor,               not               even               a               nurse,               so               held               out               for               three               years               working               until               I               knew               what               I               wanted               to               finish               my               degree               in.
                   I               discovered               a               hidden               talent               for               gardening               and               my               passion               for               plants               grew               as               a               grounds               worker.

    That               was               when               I               made               up               my               mind               to               go               back               to               school               and               finish               with               a               Bachelors               of               Science               in               Horticulture.

    Also               working               outside               pulling               weeds               all               day               is               not               my               dream               job.

    Now               I               do               have               a               great               job               doing               what               I               love,               however               my               income               level               is               not               what               I               was               wanting.

    It               could               have               been               if               I               choose               to               move,               but               I               decided               to               stay               close               to               my               family.
                   I               now               work               for               Academia               and               I               tell               you               there               is               nothing               more               depressing               then               seeing               students               not               care               about               their               own               research               projects.

    The               only               thing               holding               them               back               from               graduation               is               procrastination               to               do               the               work.

    If               they               would               have               followed               their               passions,               the               work               needed               would               have               come               as               joy,               not               a               burden.
                   Hoping               for               a               nice               salary               after               college               is               not               a               bad               thing,               but               choosing               a               path               that               doesn't               interest               you               is.

    Please               take               the               time               to               find               what               places               a               spark               in               your               life               before               attending               college.

    What               better               than               to               be               happy               and               content               working               with               something               you               love               versus               working               for               a               dreadful               career               just               so               you               can               buy               material               things?

    Top               3               Community               Colleges               in               Virginia:               Blue               Ridge               Community               College               (BRCC)
                   Located               in               Weyers               Cave,               Virginia,               Blue               Ridge               has               the               best               professors               of               any               community               college               in               the               Shenandoah               Valley.
                   Blue               Ridge               offers               a               large               range               of               major               academics               including               funeral               services,               nursing,               automotive               repair,               information               systems,               and               mechanical               engineering.
                   This               community               college               offers               a               large               range               of               non-credit               classes               including               pharmacy               technician               certification               prep               courses,               photography,               and               construction.
                   Blue               Ridge               Community               College               offers               four               associate               of               arts               and               science               degrees               that               will               provide               a               smooth               transfer               to               a               four               year               college               or               university.

    Blue               Ridge               also               has               a               transfer               degree               in               radiography.

    Students               in               the               radiography               program               practice               and               receive               additional               training               at               Rockingham               Memorial               Hospital.
                   There               are               only               two               cons               to               Blue               Ridge               Community               College.

    The               first               con               is               the               strict               parking               policy.

    They               insist               students               walk               a               mile               to               the               campus               even               during               evening               class               time               when               there               isn't               a               lot               of               employees               on               the               grounds               (they               have               closer               spaces).

    Either               way,               the               Blue               Ridge               flashlight               cops               will               stick               a               ticket               on               your               car.

    The               parking               situation               is               not               good               for               students               who               attend               night               classes               or               senior               citizens               who               are               taking               a               class.
                   The               second               con               is               the               Houff               Library.

    Warm               and               friendly               staff,               but               the               atmosphere               and               décor               of               the               library               is               not.

    It               gives               a               dark               and               gloomy               impression.

    Plus,               the               book               selection               isn't               impressive.

    BRCC               students               are               better               off               going               to               Massanutten               Regional               Library               to               do               research.
                   However,               BRCC's               academic               programs,               non-credit               classes,               and               professional               and               friendly               admissions               staff               completely               out               way               the               two               cons.

    No               place               is               perfect.
                   Top               3               Community               Colleges               in               Virginia:               Piedmont               Virginia               Community               College               (PVCC)
                   Piedmont               Virginia               Community               College               is               located               in               Charlottesville,               Virginia.

    Five               hundred               students               transfer               from               Piedmont               to               a               four               year               college               or               university               every               year.
                   Associate               in               applied               science               degrees               include               information               technology,               management,               accounting,               emergency               medical               services,               and               law               enforcement.

    Associate               in               liberal               arts               degree               prepares               students               to               transfer               to               a               four               year               college               or               university.

    Students               have               their               choice               of               concentrations               like               music,               drama,               or               dance               under               the               liberal               arts               degree.

    The               associate               in               science               program               offers               biotechnology,               business               administration,               and               horticulture               majors.

    Plus,               the               associated               in               science               degree               is               transferable.

    PVCC               hosts               an               enormous               amount               of               non-credit               classes               for               adults               who               want               to               upgrade               their               job               skills               or               start               a               new               career.

    Non-credit               classes               include,               but               not               limited               to               welding,               crafts,               photography,               healthcare,               and               marketing.
                   Piedmont               is               the               best               community               college               for               working               adults               who               want               to               study               nursing.

    Most               programs               are               very               stringent               concerning               time               and               concentration,               which               is               why               most               adults               who               work               or               have               small               children               put               off               their               education.

    The               PVCC               nursing               program               allows               nursing               students               to               get               their               education               part-time.

    Weekend               and               evening               clinical               class               options               are               available.
                   The               only               con               to               Piedmont               Virginia               Community               College               concerns               students               who               have               to               commute               from               the               west.

    Afton               Mountain               (located               on               I-64)               is               a               treacherous               area               in               the               winter,               late               at               night,               and               the               early               morning.

    Commuters               must               battle               fog               and               deer               when               crossing               Afton               during               the               mentioned               times.

    Anyone               who               is               taking               classes               at               PVCC               that               commutes               from               the               west               should               consider               a               temporary               move               to               Charlottesville               or               Albemarle               County.
                   Top               3               Community               Colleges               in               Virginia:               John               Tyler               Community               College               (JTCC)
                   John               Tyler               is               located               in               Chester,               Virginia,               which               is               only               a               few               miles               outside               of               Richmond,               the               state               capital.

    John               Tyler's               academic               program               is               tailor               made               to               provide               skills               to               employers               in               its               geographic               location.
                   The               majority               of               John               Tyler's               student               body               is               made               up               of               mothers               who               work,               which               is               a               good               indication               of               flexible               class               schedules.

    JTCC               provides               distance               learning               opportunities               and               evening               and               weekend               study.

    Part-time               on-campus               employment               is               available               for               students               who               need               extra               money.
                   The               American               School               Search               website               gave               John               Tyler               Community               College               an               "A"               in               safety.

    Crime               is               practically               non-existent               on               campus.
                   An               A.A.S.

    degree               is               available               in               visual               arts.

    Associates               in               applied               science               degrees               are               available               in               business               management,               accounting,               law               enforcement,               mechanical               engineering,               etc.

                   Students               of               JTCC               constantly               comment               on               how               willing               the               professors               are               to               help               them.

    However,               the               one               academic               drawback               is               the               student               to               teacher               ratio.

    Yes,               the               professors               are               extremely               helpful,               but               overloaded.

    JTCC's               student               to               faculty               ratio               is               64:1.

    This               is               a               problem               because               the               community               college               is               closely               located               to               one               of               the               biggest               metropolitan               areas               in               the               state.

    However,               this               problem               can               be               easily               fixed               by               hiring               more               professors.
                   In               Conclusion
                   Listed               above               are               the               top               3               community               colleges               in               Virginia               from               a               general               point               of               view               (meaning               taking               all               aspects               of               the               community               colleges               into               account).

    Remember,               no               school               is               perfect               unless               it               is               the               perfect               fit               for               you               and               the               plans               you               have               for               your               future.
